a wooden cased radio will be cleaned, the wood will receive a "nourishing" of a concoction of ingredients for removing grime and rehydrating the pours of the wooden fibers. Then it will receive a hand applied quality furniture paste wax coat and buff.
IF the case is to be refinished, it will be stripped, all veneers will be reglued or replaced and the case will be refinished using toning lacquers and a clear top coat just as the factory did it many years ago.
The chassis is the heart of the radio. I inspect and clean the speaker. Patch any small imperfections in the cone and clean the voice coil. If the speaker cone is damaged beyond reasonable repair, it will be replaced.

The chassis is disassembled and cleaned. All components are inspected and replaced as needed. Coupling capacitors and filter capacitors are always all replaced. Resistors are check for tolerances and replaced as needed.
a new line cord and plug will be placed on the chassis. All controls and the tuning capacitor will be inspected, cleaned and lubed for good performance and long life. The dial lamp (if the radio has one) will be replaced with a NOS new lamp. LED lamps are available at the owners request. All tubes are cleaned and tested for continuity, emissions and integrity. Any marginal tubes will also be replaced. A chassis alignment will be performed and I always play the radio for a "burn in" time frame to trouble shoot and issues that may arrive. Usually between 48 and 50 hours.
During the reassembly process the radio is again inspected. A 3.5 mm mini jack is added at this time. During the reassembly process the radio is again inspected. A 3.5 mm mini jack is added at this time. If the customer wants this option for playing their iPod, MP3, bluetooth or other outside audio sources. Not every client opts for this option as some are very particular to keep their radios as original as possible. I like to add them as a viable option for the dwindling AM radio reception options of the 21st century.
As the radio goes back together, I inspect and clean the dial cover and will replace it if it is damaged or the customer requests and new, clearer one.
The speaker grill cloth (unless in very good original condition) will most likely have to be replaced too.
Then the reassembly continues with the replacement of the speaker, wiring and chassis. Lastly the knobs will be cleaned and detailed for an overall good looking package and a radio that will, hopefully last a lifetime.
